You’ve heard of the Loch Ness monster “Nessie” - but have you met Sheilagh??
Yes, Loch Shiel is said to be host to its own mythical beast with sightings dating back to 1874.
Shielagh is said to be about 70 feet long and shows three large humps in the water. Reports of sightings of Shielagh can be traced back to the 1870's.
Shielagh 's most diligent investigator and one who collected many reports was Benedictine priest Father Dieckhoff, based at Fort Augustus Abbey and passed
away in 1950.
One report concerns a farher and his two young sons - they claimed that in 1905 they saw three animate humps breaking the surface of the loch from the bow of the mail boat Clanranald opposite Gaskan.
Another sighting describes 3 humps moving fast in thewater, and another sighting describes 4 animals which were reportedly seen at once with long necks with
upturned-boat back.
